Yesterday my son was told the local housing association had a place for him (he has special needs). He and I and indeed the family were all excited for him. However, a few hours after being told and close to the end of the work day he was informed the place had been allocated. Needless to say I saw red and had the phone's been open when I found out about it I would have been raging down the phone.
However this morning I was much calmer and managed to get through to them where I was told by the allocation manager that in fact I had come through to the wrong department and I should ring the council because he is considered homeless!?!?
I rang the number she gave me only to get a constant answer phone - it appears no one was in work today - OR - they were just too lazy to answer the phone.
I guess this means a letter - which like the emails will be ignored.

Sounds like a typical bureaucratic foul-up, Dabbit. Type of thing happens everywhere with the left hand being apparently unaware of what the right hand is doing. It's shameful, really...

Nice to know things are about the same all over the planet. I went to Senior Housing Authority yesterday because I can't afford to live where I am much longer. The waiting list is 4 to 5 years. Who knows if I'll still be alive that long? (I'll be 69 in April). Really good planning on the part of the powers-that-be on how many people are going to become"Seniors". Don't they have that info ahead of time? Like the Census? To top it off. The town I live in doesn't have subsidized senior housing at all. So I have tomove to the other town, which does have it, and THEN wait 4 to 5 years. I think, because I am good at being frugal, and so far in good health, that I will be able to find a"private" apartment some place on my own. I hope.

It really is deplorable. What a society it is when the older one gets the less respect we're shown.

Thats right Mark...Two 'carers' were recently taken to court for feeding an old lady with Alzheimers talc powder. The son suspected and set up a camera without their knowledge. Even though it was on camera they got away freely with it...Just hope the judge never needs looking after

That's deplorable, Dabbit. If there are no criminal charges to be made perhaps the son should sue the carers.

Not sure whether he was going to bring a 'civil' (I think thats the right one) case against them..They did get banned froim working in care though - yippee! But with our government saying silly things like prison should only be for the most dispicable of crimes - what chance has this country got?

Yes, sad isn't it? Liberal used to mean caring and open-minded, but it seems to more and more mean letting more and more people do whatever they want without consequence. That's not liberal, that's insane.

The latest on the situation is that we had a phone call last week from the local 'council' offering him a one bedroomed house - just waiting to hear about him seeing the place

That's not liberal, that's insane. Mark, I am surprised you wrote that statement which labels liberals as all the same. As all conservatives have different degrees, so do liberals. Now I am a liberal, as most of my friends are; however I don't know anyone liberal or conservative that don't have caring hearts and most emphatically want consequences that fit the crime. Now some say the 'liberals' are the cause of the illegal immigration problems. Isn't that ridiculous? It is the business people that continue to hirer these people (and some aid them in obtaining fraudulent paperwork). Now I wouldn't really say businesses are the cause of the problem. Individual rights are very important. Our country is strong on these rights. Yet, one must think of the good of the whole too. Should I step down off my bandwagon? OK I will.

It seems that it takes forever to get into special housing--whether it be for senior citizens or low income, etc. There is not enough decent housing to support our fellow citizens. And . . as you say the wheels of 'red tape' move exceedingly slow. I hope your son hears soon and it is good news.

The thing here Maria too is that immigrants are coming into the country and the EU is saying we have to house them...But I shan't get started, I'll be here all night

Dave, part of the problem with government supported housing and the lack and quality of it, is the need for more tax dollars to support it all properly and to have more quality housing available.
As for the immigrant issues . . .I have so much to say about the Illegal immigrant problem here in the USA. But that is for another forum and time.

I know how you feel Maria...Surely this canbe the only country that welcomes people who have terrorised British (and other nationalities) on British soil by hijacking. We then not only give them a house but money as well to get started and live on...

You may have read that our government leaders are working on an immigration bill to deal with the illegal immigrants. There are some good parts to it but also some very bad parts too. I think the problem, in part (and please excuse my ignorance) is that there are many very poor countries and most of the people want a better life. After all aren't the streets in America paved with gold? LOL What I am very resentful of is the fact that so many people come here and never learn English. (I know this isn't all the immigrants--documented or otherwise)
As my parents were not born here, I understand the plight of the newly arrived. However, when my parents entered school not knowing a word of English, they as well as their parents, struggled to learn English and become a part of this country. Yes they initially lived in an area that was predominately ethic (their own country men) but soon moved out. My grandparents worked very hard as well as embracing the American way of life. They did not forget their own cultural but became American. So many of todays illegals and some documented immigrants, do not do that. So my big question is . . . If your country was so great and you do not want to assimilate, why come here? Don't bring your countries problems here. We have enough of our own.
Ok I will try to stop now.

I don't mind Maria when people do have a genuine need of reloaction to another country, however when they just want to be greedy and get a nicer lifer (as opposed to a safer - better one) that's when I object.
Another problem (and a major one) with this country is the EU (European Union) who insist on opening European borders - allowing members of other EU countries to settle in any other EU country. The amount of Portugese people that have moved into the country must be 99% of the Portugese population I think. We have a lot locally and a new specialist portugese shop has opened, which refuses to sell anything to English people - if this were reversed we'd be in trouble. Its' things like this that cause racial dislike.
I'd better shut up now or I'll go onall night...

Where did I label liberals as all the same? It's true that there are different degrees of either persuasion, but that's the problem with labels isn't it?
Once you apply a label to someone (or to yourself) then you are judged by what the majority of people who adopt that label do - whether the so-called liberal, or the so-called conservative. I reject any label for myself because some of my views are liberal, some moderate and some conservative. Not because I decided to be an equal-opportunity thinker - no - I think about any situation or problem and come to what I think is a logical decision or conclusion as to what should be done.
Other people may adjudge any single position as being liberal, moderate or conservative that you express and based on that decide that you are of that stripe through and through - not me! I accept no labels. And, just as it might be unfair to label all people of any political stripe as being the same (something I neither said nor intended to imply, I might add), it is also unfair to give someone a label based on whether one agrees with or disagrees with that person on any particular issue.
I refuse to accept a label and would resent anyone trying to pin one on me, because they'd be wrong. In my opinion, anyone who pins any sort of label on themselves is being a little naive and foolish because then they are pigeon-holing themselves unnecessarily and essentially telling the world that they are close-minded. And, that is my opinion.
Having expressed my opinion, I will now step down from my soap box and relinquish the floor.
Next!

Knowing how you feel about labels, as I had said before I was very surprised at your statement, "Liberal used to mean caring and open-minded, but it seems to more and more mean letting more and more people do whatever they want without consequence." But I still consider myself a liberal. So I guess I am being "naive and foolish." I do however agree that folks have varying degrees of beliefs. Although there are times--such as child abuse cases--where I am very conservative and say imprison the villains for life without parole. And although I consider myself a liberal, I also have a very open mind about 99% of what I hear. That is actually one of the reason I often have a difficult time making up my mind. I keep taking in new information and it influences me so much. I guess that is what comes from being a Pieces.
