Someone please explain how it works, we welcome muslims into our country build them mosques etc, and then when a British teacher asks her young pupils to name a teddy - world war three breaks out. She is arrested and if found guilty she will get either six months in prison or 40 lashes in public OR both. Her crime - naming the teddy Mohammed!
A genuine mistake and one of which 22/25 pupils wanted to name it... Argh

Utterly nonsensical, Dabbit, nonsensical indeed. I used to live in Turkey - Mohammad is a very common name in that part of the world and as people immigrate to other countries you see those names more and more often. Is it the fact that it was a toy? A Teddy Bear? How silly.

The story mad international news today. It was an English school teacher in Sudan (I think that was the country) who allowed 25 (?) kindergarten children to pick the name. A couple of the parts were angry and reported it to the police. It is a big felony of mocking the Mohammad--worth 140 lashes or a year in jail. The British Embassy is working on this problem. BTW, the school is now closed because of this. Pretty amazing!

Its utterly daft Maria...It was reported that she'd get up to 40 public lashes or six months in jail. Some minister has called the Sudaneess (sp?) counsol in the UK to an urgent meeting...Time will tell. She has been arrested by all accords

It's a sticky wicket all round, Dabbit. The Sudanese, after making such a fuss about it, are in danger of losing face if they give ground now, and fear they will look weak and out of control. Now, if they were smart, they would give her a reprimand and perhaps levy a small fine or else force her out of the country - that way they save face and the poor teacher is not beaten or jailed.
Sad thing is, it is a morally bankrupt government which needs to be overturned, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

It makes me feel wrong feelings towards the country Mark - I mean if it were here in the UK and some muslim said something detrimental about our Christianity it would attract a bit of media attention probably but nothing much more...

Probably true, Dabbit, sad, but true. IMHO, there's room for all beliefs and opinions, and if a society feels so vulnerable that it resists opinions and viewpoints contrary to theirs then it is a sad commentary indeed on that society.

Well, let's see how 'smart' they are in her sentencing. Like I said, if they are 'smart', they'll give her some face-saving sentence, but nothing as serious as lashes or prison time.

15 days in prison and deportation. I am sure she is glad to go back to her own country where such things may not (?) be made to seem so terrible.
So does this mean no one should be named Jesus? Oh dear what a problem. What about all the 'bad' Muslims , some of whom are named Muhammad, and are terrorists and murder, rape innocent people?
Aren't various religious words and doctrines interesting?

Well, it was pretty much as I suspected would happen. They couldn't just let her go without 'losing face' in the Muslim world - so what will happen is she'll be fairly well treated while incarcerated for a fortnight and then deported.
I guess I have to change my name now, since it's biblical, so the 'Name Police' don't come after me. Oh, and you too, David.... ;D

Well the Greeks can come for me. Wait I'm a derivitive of Cassandra! Maybe I'm safe. I think the whole world is nuts. THere some state that wants to outlaw spanking of children. Now how in the ------------ world do you enforce that? And who would want to. It's kind of like taking away tag from the playground. See The world is nuts.

Sandy I agree the world is going mad, here in the UK we are thinking banning smacking (after the smoking ban), and there is rumour of them even banning breathing

What's next, Dabbit, banning fat Santas? Wait, they've already done that, haven't they? ;D

All this social or political correctness rather drives me batty. (Imagine skinny Santas?) Then again, I think it is sort of like unions. Unions did so much good for the common work when they first came about getting decent wages, safe working conditions, benefits, and stopping children from toiling in factories. Unfortunately, some unions later became infested with mafia and links to crime families; while others have done harm to industries by raising salaries and benefits so high that manufactures have fled the US for cheap wages in foreign lands. Sort of like a pendulum. First going in one direction and then the other way.

I think, Maria, there are too many people thinking of themselves first and foremost and the devil take the hindmost. I agree - at one time unions served a real purpose, but a few, power-mad and money-hungry people gained control and the good that could have been done for workers was subverted for the aggrandizement of the few and we all suffer through much higher prices for the things produced by the union workers. As you say, it is a cycle, a particularly vicious cycle at times.

Here Here! Now we have to deal with inferior and unsafe products made in China by slaves (maybe a little exaggeration there). The only sneakers I will buy are NuBalance because they are made in the US. And I like Timberland products because it is a US green company. Hmmm human right to products. Gee it must be a woman mind thinking!
