As you read your get into the rhythm of the writer. The words flow, the reading flows. Then you hit a stopper. You just stop. You have come upon a word that is out of rhythm. One such word for me is acquiesce or any form of it. It isn't one that your recognize and read you have to pronounce it. And usually you pronounce it wrong and it sounds bad and it stops you again. For some reason the last few years that word is popular with authors. Another word that I came across the other day was masochism. It stopped me. Do you find some words are stoppers? Words that just break your rhythm and slow you down.?

Well, I can't think of any particular 'words' that stop me, per se, but sentences that are too long might. I mean, I lose interest if the sentence drags on. Or, I might just lose track of what's going on. Another thing that I find distracting is description that goes on ad infinitum with no action or dialogue to keep things moving along. Know what I mean?

Yes, was just talking to my auntie Alice and she was trying to read a Nevada Barr book that she was having trouble starting for that reason. Or they try to introduce 20 characters in the first sentence and when they are done(or before they are done)you just want to say "Get on with it will you?"
