I have been browsing Christmas catalogs and something in just about all of them caught my eye and started me to wondering. If I remember correctly stocking stuffers used to be neat little inexpensive gifts used to fill the Christmas stocking. Looking at the catalogs that isn't the case anymore. Most of the stuffers started at $20 and up to over $100. Now to me that is a gift not a stocking stuffer. Am I way behind and really cheap or are catalogs pulling one over on us?

I think it's a cross between retailers wanting to 'upgrade' us and inflation. I always have reserved stockings for things like you mentioned and fresh fruit. Little, useful things need not be all that expensive if one is a careful shopper, and who doesn't like a nice, shiny bright apple?

My sons and now my grandchildren get small things in their stockings, like pencils, rubbers, hair bands for the girls and so on. They always get a satsuma or apple and a small piece of chocolate too. Nothing expensive, but they are always so pleased with them.

Exactly, that's what I'm talking about, Fluffy - simple little things that a child enjoys, little 'extra' surprises...nothing too dear.

Stocking stuffers are always my favorite things to shop for. When my children were younger, I always put an orange in the toe of the stocking. And always a toothbrush too. Little hygiene things they would need. When college came about, then they found a roll of quarters (laundry you know!). Of course, chocolate and a few fun items. I always include a nice Christmas ornaments with the date on it. I use to make the ornaments but nowadays I look for unusual ones for them. I also always have a handmade gift for my kids. Usually something that I have knitted, crocheted or sewed.
