I hope Oprah doesn't read this. I'm really not wanting to go onto national tv and airing my sad condition. It started at a very young age and has gotten worse as time goes on. Now it's to the point that I panic when I find I am down to my last book! It's so bad that I have been hoarding paperbacks. Just in case I run out of library books before I can get back to the library. NO! Don;t even think about an intervention! I will not be cured! As soon as you leave I will start reading again. Even if it's a cereal box. Wow!!!!Now I feel better. They say confession and recognizing the problem is the first step to recovery. Thanks for listening. It helps to have friends who will take the time to listen.

I have to confess, Sandy, that I suffer from the same affliction. Unfortunately, I have a more SPECIFIC strain of the disease...I am addicted to COOKBOOKS! I read them the way that you read novels...I can't put them down. I actually have a wall of bookcases in my kitchen. People can't figure out why I would keep so many books in my kitchen, until I explain to them that all of the books...over 350, last count...are cookbooks! I don't really "collect" them...it's more like I run a "home" for "orphaned" and "abandoned" cookbooks. I don't want an intervention, either. It's become a part of me, and I accept who I am, along with (what others may see as) my shortcomings. BOOKAHOLICS UNITE!!!!

What we need is a support group - We can call it BRA, Book Readers Anonymous....when you need support, call up a BRA friend to prop you up. I can think of several appropriate slogans, such as BRA will never let you down...

Okay...just as long as you don't make these "BRA" people take some kind of oath and make them cross their hearts...I think Playtex has already beat you to that one...

Oh, yeah, Juana Cookie's addicted to cookbooks! She's got quite a collection, and has been able to send me recipes from time to time that I have been looking for. My collection of actual cookbooks isn't quite as extensive as Juana's, but I am gathering quite a collection of recipes that I am saving on a computer disc. I haven't counted them yet, but I know there's quite a few.

My addiction is getting worse. I have lots of books stoired for the day I might run out of library books to read so I don't have a panic attack but........ I recieved an email from Amazon and they had a special!!! Buy 3 get 1 free!! How do you pass that up? Do those people know what that did to me? Do they care? I was right there immediately on the site! I hunted and looked and was in a tizzy trying to pick out just four books. I almost decided to order 12 when SANITY happened. I looked at the column that says order total. : O Nothing like the bottom line to bring you to a crashing finish. But the high was fun while it lasted.

I have to admit that maybe my obsession is not as bad as I thought.I was away for 4 days. I had a book to take along. But in the flurry of leaving it was left behind. I almost asked to turn around to get it but bit the bullet and went on. My aunt took pity on me and gave me a James Patterson book. Just the thought of that book being there helped. I admit I opened the book but not one page did I read. It did go from room to room with me like a security blanket. Wow, 4 days and no book reading! Phenomenal!!!

Don't feel bad. I did that once. Was about 2/3 of the way through a book which I left in my hotel room. Oh well, if you're ever in Havana, Cuba and happen to go by the Hotel Nacional , would you pick it up for me?

Sure and would you be paying a reward? I have a date with castro. The lower case c was not an accident. He doesn't deserve a capital c. I'm hoping I can get him to practice tripping over stage steps.

He doesn't seem to have any trouble tripping himself up all on his own, Sandy. The problem is, I think, that the ones that will take his place are no better. And, having been in Cuba for a while I know that the people want and deserve more than they have. However, as long as we continue to disallow trade with them, they will suffer. If things improved economically for them I don't think it would take long for the people to overthrow the communist government which has never worked and cannot work, as we know, except for the elite few who run things. Communism has failed there as it has failed everywhere else and has fallen almost everywhere.

Withdrawal is setting in. I haven't stepped foot inside the library for a few weeks. Miss walking among all those stories. On the up side of my addiction. It's been hot and muggy so I have been spending time sitting on one of my porches in the cool breeze with a glass of cold water and reading. Now that's what a hot summer day is for.

Again heat and humidity and I'm reading in the shade. Thing is I read my last library book and am hitting my emergency stash. Scarey... We tried several times last week to get to the library. Never made it. A stupid bike race!!!!!!!!! The tour de toona. Anyway it's too hot to get into a car and drive to the library and gas is too expensive for just a trip to the library. I will just have to bite the bullet and read what I have til things get back to normal. It's very stressful though.

Sorry, Sandy - poor, poor thing. If it's not the Tour de 'Toona it's something else isn't it? Why don't you start a paperback swap club or something?

I did for a while. I read much much faster than others and need many more books. They couldn't keep up with me.

I meant, amongst your fellow members here as well. If you got enough people interested it might work.

I believe that my condition is sort of genetic. My brother that I don't ever remember reading a book unless he was forced to has taken up reading. Started reading about a year ago. He confessed to me last night that he carries a book with him all the time now. If he is doing yard work and needs a break, he whips out the book and reads for a few minutes. He also confessed to being afraid of running out of books to read. When his waiting to be read stack gets down to 3 or so , he is off to the bookstore and getting more. I'm not alone in my obsession. Whew!

There's a lot of that going around, so it may not be genetic. I fear it might be a virus. I've always been that way, myself.
