As a child the newspaper image will always remain with me - that image was of a line of beagles in 'cages' being forced to smoke. All in the name of research! Now I am older that image is still with me an although I did smoke a small amount at one time for my period of rebellion - I am now very anti- smoking, no animal should suffer like those ones in the paper all those years ago.
As for cosmetic research - thats a nother big no for me beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if people need to be caked in make up to think they're beutiful then let them do so - just don;t test on animals.
I'm not fully sure how I feel about animals being tested for human medical research though - presently I would say I am more against than for - but the jury is out still

A smoking ban comes into force here on 1st July - no smoking in any public place from that date! Can't wait to see how they are going to police it though...

Dabbit, I just had a humorous image pop into my head of policemen dashing about squirting malefactors with squirt guns.

A few years ago, smoking in public places (bars, restaurants) and office buildings etc, was totally banned here in my state. Now all the bars and restaurants complained about how they would go out of business and how bad the rule was and would hurt businesses everywhere. Initially, some places saw a drop in business. But guess what? Most restaurants eventually saw an increase in their business. Even bars weren't really hurt in the end. My state was not the first state to do this and now many other states have followed suit. There are always a few who break the law but then there are always those that report it. Most owners don't want fines and they are the ones to enforce the practice of no smoking. More than you wanted to know

It is already practise in Ireland (and Scotland I think) and is coming in to England on July 1st...I hope your right Maria - I hate (probably because I'm an ex-smaoker myself) the smell of smoke on my clothes or in my nose when someone lights up next to me.

I think that tobacco ought to be taxed so highly that it becomes prohibitively expensive to purchase. I would offer some sort of incentive to farmers to convert their tobacco crops to some other crop. Fewer producers will raise the price of the crops. Further, I would slap some sort of 'public interest' tax on tobacco item manufacturers that would cause them to raise the price of their products to a prohibitive level, and then levy an additional sales or excise tax on tobacco products. Once people are faced paying $15 - $20 for a pack of cigarettes, either they'll smoke less or quit altogether.
