Most people don't like paying tax, but I guess it is essential to the running of such great countries as the UK (did I say Great) and USA etc. But when you think about it in the UK (Not sure about the USA but would guess things are similar) we currently pay: 25% from our wages, 17.5% (currently reduced to 15% though will be rising back) on everything we buy including any meals we eat in a restaurant. Add our National Insurance contribution and pension contributions and we must pay about 50% or so of our earnings in tax! No wonder those MP's can claim for porn films (did you hear about that one), and sink plugs.

Yikes! The UK is certainly no tax haven, is it? No, I hadn't heard anything about the politicians and porn films, what was that all about?

I had read that the UK was a high taxation country. Must have been why The Colonies fought the good fight. We here are to get a tax break also. Sad thing is we have to eventually pay it back. It's something that wasn't mentioned when the tax break was announced. Anyway what ever break the Big O gives the state takes away. The price you pay to have a government. But grouching aside you have to admit it's nice to be able to grouch. We still are so much better off than most people. I just hope and pray that it stays that way for the USA. It's scary times.
OK I know what porn is but what is sink plugs. I thought you people spoke English like us?

Well, a sink plug is what I would call it as well, Dabbit. Perhaps they call it something different in Pennsylvania due to their 'Dutch' influence.... ;D
Those we call 'undershorts' here, Dabbit. Short pants are like Bermuda Shorts, etc, that some men and women wear (not me) in summer or at the seaside, and which are commonly called 'shorts' here. Panties are something that women wear as undergarments.
I call the long version either pants or trousers, interchangeably. But when I've been shopping for a new pair of trousers, for example, I'll put my purchases in the 'trunk' of my car, rather than in the 'boot' and if I have engine trouble, I'll pop open the 'hood', rather than the 'bonnet'.......go figure.....

A "sink plug" could also be called a 'stopper' in the U.S. Your knickers = our panties Your undershorts = briefs (tighty whities) , boxer shorts Your trousers could be our slacks or pants
Having 'no truck' with someone or something would mean that you want nothing to do with them or that you have no patience with them.
Please understand that I am not only American but Texan and might say many things that will need translation however I do hope that you in the UK will continue to try to 'put up' with us and our strange customs and language.
