Here in the UK (and hopefully elsewhere too) there is a free screening for breast cancer for ladies between the age of 50 and 70, It is carried out every three years. I think it is a great scheme which I am sure is mirrored around the globe in developed countries. You can read about mammograms here

Sometimes free screenings are available here, Dabbit, sponsored by some grojup or other, but by the government. Usually though, they are paid for by private insurance. Thankfully, most people have private insurance through their employers.

However, some private insurance companies control what they think you need and in what timely manner you can have a mamogram. I needed one every 6 months for 2 years and my insurance company gave me GRIEF over it. Until a nurse told me to tell them this (I finally got covered) "Are you refusing me medical coverage when I need it?" She was an angel for helping me because I would have never been able to afford going through everything out of pocket. Would you believe back then the insurance company thought I was too young to have to be going through all these tests but it was those tests that caught some very questionable lumps in me and they were removed. Thanks for letting me share.

Ruthie I'm glad things worked out in the end! insurance companies can be so 'wrong' at times can't they. I am always in shock when I read stories like yours where they try to wriggle out of paying for treatment. Even in my claim for compensation after the accident they tried to make it out that it was our fault for pushing and wearing dark clothing.

They can indeed by a slimy lot, Dabbit. Not all, but a majority it seems are not exactly "up and above board" in their dealings with their clientele.
