In the UK there is no screening for prostrate problems in men unlike breast and cervical screening for women. From what I gather two simple tests are involved initially a blood test and a rectal exaimination - how much can these cost the NHS I wonder?

Not much, I should think Dabbit. But I think the tests are necessary, even if you have to pay for them - better safe than sorry.
I just had one recently. The doctor asked me, at a delicate moment, to turn my head and cough. I said, "Cough? Doc I can't even breathe!"
But all kidding aside, you should have it done annually - it can't be all that costly, it involves the PSA, Prostatic Specific Antigen blood test and the simple digital exam to detect enlargement.

Personally speaking I can't see why they are so reluctant, they (quite rightly) scan women.
