I think Mark was trying to sound 'international'? LOL As a young person I went clubbing. another name for bars. But around here it is called "clubs" --places for music, dancing and a few cold pops. :-) Yet, when I visit England, it is pubs for me. Well not so much the drinking but the atmosphere and pub food and merriment.

Actually, I've always called them 'Pubs', the word 'Bar' has always seemed a little prosaic and pedestrian. Clubs, to me, are something you join, and actually I've never spent a lot of time in Pubs, Bars, or Clubs, come to think of it.

Now I hate pubs - can't abide them and much prefer a nice wine bar (no I'm not posh honest) - but I have never liked pubs - unlikme my big bruv of course who finds it hard to pass one by without testing it.

I don't mind them if they are sort of quiet, not smoke-filled, with a cozy little corner to have a pint and cheerful conversation in, but I still never go - haven't been to a bar, pub or club in years.

Yes, and I used to eat at a pub at several islands in the Caribbean that catered to the English (former British colonies) palate, so I could maintain a somewhat proper diet, but usually at lunch time when they hadn't quite gotten rowdy yet - too intent on watching their Cricket matches on the television while quaffing their pints and gobbling down their shepherd pie.
