Alex, my oldest cat, Baby, has suddenly decided he wants to sleep on top of my kitchen table. He knows he doesn't belong there but is insisting that it belongs to him. What should I do?

I would keep something on the table that Baby doesn't like, perhaps something with an odor he finds offensive, or doesn't like the looks of. If that failed, find an alternative he does like, like some sort of perch off to the side. You can find them in most pet stores. Thing is, cats like to be high so they feel safe as well as being able to survey their domains.

HEHE. A cat after my own resting place. Who knows why? A sudden urge to be where Baby isn't supposed to be? Maybe it's warmer there. Maybe it's the attention Baby gets being where no cat should be. Can Baby see outside better from the table than other places? I enjoy watching the world go by while warm, safe and dry inside. Mark's suggestions are good. Try them and see what happens. It may just be a phase that kitty is going through. After all it's January and nothing is really happening. Could be post holiday depression. If all else fails a holiday in the Bahamas sounds good to me. I would be available to accompany the kitty. For a fee, of course.

Thanks for the info. My kitties do have a nice multi-level perch thing that sits right in my front bay window. That way that can both keep an eye on the goings-on of the neighborhood. I have placed a a box in the middle of the table. Baby knocked it off. Imagine that! There are so many nice cozy soft spots around the house rather than a hard table top that doesn't look directly onto anything. Let's see what I can do with something smelly. :-) But Alex, he may just want a trip to warm country. Got your bags packed?

Perhaps something with an orange-y scent - they hate oranges. (Right Alex?)

I will try orange-y scented something. Didn't know they didn't like that scent. What about orange peels? I have real oranges.

Or maybe polish with 'Lemon-fresh Pledge' or something like that - it may be the citrus they hate.

I didn't get around to the 'citrus' thing because Baby has now decided to sleep in one of closets. He just work his wiles on the door until it opens and in he goes. That is fine with me. So Alex, I think he isn't thinking about a trip right now. Maybe in a few months.

Do you think Alex's computer is playing tricks?

Nothing worse than a cat that doesn't get his trip to the Bahamas. Better give him a bit to get over it.
