I do have 2 problems I can't figure out. First - everything I do turns up as an icon on my desktop. it's almost full. How do I get rid of the ones I don't need or want.? Second. Well, forget it. I want to change it but I forgot what I was going to ask. LOL I'll just try the desktop problem first.

Tarradiddle, one thing you can do is right click on your desktop, select 'Arrange Icons By', then from the drop down list, select 'Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard', this will consolidate most of the icons in an 'Unused Desktop Shortcuts' folder. That's a starting point.
It sounds as though you've been placing a lot of icons on your desktop. Also, every time you run an installation of some software it will usually ask you if you want to place a shortcut (icon) on your desktop. You might think about telling it 'No' in the future.

I never "put" things on the desktop. If it asks me, I say no. I run the desktop cleanup wizard almost every day. It doesn't do anything. Honest! It's not me!

Tarradiddle as Mark says you can create a new folder on your desktop call it say Unused items or something like that.
To do this you need right click on your desktop and then scroll to new folder Once your folder is created you can rename it by again RIGHT clicking then scrolling to rename.
Now your folder is created simply LEFT click on your icons and DRAG (move your mouse without letting go of the right click) to the folder. The icon will then move to your new folder. Do this for each of the icons you want to move. Alternatively if you are sure you don't want the icon you can LEFT CLICK on the icon and scroll to delete. This will move your icon to the recyled folder, which can be emptied by LEFT clicking and then empty.
Hope this helps, but please do feel free to ask again I'm sure someone will be able to help
