You can never win with the British an the weather, it is either too hot or too wet or too cold! My garden was coming on a real treat with everything seeming to like the mixture of wet & dry/warm/cloudy days we had of late. But the then came the heat and with tempretures rising quicker than automatic bollards my plants have started to wilt. My potatoes have drooped, my courgette have sagged, my cucumber has nearly left us, and my squash has almost given up too.
Of course I can understand it, I feel much the same and I am indoors...

LOL, same here, Dabbit. However, substitute body parts for your vegetable names, and you will perhaps better understand how oppressively hot is here, as well. Right now, the heat index is 105F (41C) ;D

Well, you can imagine then what it would be like at 41C and a high humidity - stifling!!!

I think I would be in a heap on the floor Mark! I'm struggling with these temperatures to be honest - though I'm definitely not moaning because sunshine and blue skies is lovely and mood boosting.

Sun? What is that? Here in Rhode Island, we have had rain most every day. Very few days of sun. Also are temperatures have all been unseasonably cool. Yesterday we had such bad thunder storms that street were very flooded as some homes were too. My grass is gorwing like mad but it is hard to mow when it is usaully wet. Then my flower beds seem to be getting rot from all the moisture. :-( Is this global warming?

I think I have the same weather as Mark. It hit 102 today. I'm not sure what the heat index was but it was HOT. For those of you that don't know, I'm in Texas. I decided that the best place to be right now is inside in the air conditioning. Of course, I'm dreading the electric bill next month.

Cat is the air con a big drain on the electric then? Only the select few have air con over here (not that we really need it for the amount of hot weather we get). We are struggling here with temps of 30oc so 40 + would definitely bring the UK to a stand still I reckon. they already have us on weather alert and keep telling us to drink plenty and stay as cool as we can...

Oh yes, Dabbit, the air conditioning systems draw a lot of electricity, indeed. And as for whether one 'needs' it or not, is debatable, LOL. When the government secured an apartment for me in Paris, they told me that almost none of the apartments assigned the diplomatic staff were air-conditioned, if any, because they were not needed there, since there was not that much hot weather. Well, the summers I lived in France were apparently some of the hottest on record, I think, because there were many 37-40 Centigrade days (98.6 to 104 F.) while I was living there. And it was sweltering! ;D

I know what you mean Mark and I have thought about buying a 'mobile' air con system, but wasn't sure about it (not to mention expense of buying). But I know what you mean when the weather comes (note I said when) it would certainly be appreciated here thats for cert.

My ac's have not been installed yet. And seeing as this is the end of July, unless we have a very freak heat wave, will not be installed either. Even though we have hit a few 80+ days, it has mostly been raining. June and July have been record breaking wet months. Yuck! My hanging plants are doing awful and my ground plants are getting molds. BUTTTTT, oh are the mushrooms sprouting up everywhere (that is where they shouldn't be growing.) LOL

Can't say as how I can quite understand how you guys can do without it - even if it's only a very few days that you ned it - it will sure be appreciated on those days, and that's for sure.
Maria, you mean you've been living without AC all these years?

No, I have window ac's. Two to be exact. One to cool the front of the house and one for the back and kitchen. I just haven't needed it. Although a couple of night I have slept with a fan on me. My mother, who is use to 90+ days, is still complaining about it being cold. Meanwhile I had to have the heat on thru June (I was sweltering) My mother needed the heat. I think she may be going back to the hot California weather in September. I may try to take a short vacation then. I need one.

To tell the truth, I have about exhausted my stamina for my job; and need a reallllllllly longgggggg vaca. Although parts of the job I really love. Last weekend I dinner with some folks who offered me a position that pays much more than I am making now. If it, the job, really comes thru, I am off to something new. I could give up my current 3 weeks of vaca. I will know about the other position in a few weeks. Keep your fingers crossed.
Meanwhile, summer has definetely hit here. for how long I don't know. My mother still doesn't feel the need for an ac. darn that California heat. LOL
