In the last week or two our toilet has been playing up, you know the sort of thing - flushing but filling the bowl up and slowly emptying. I called out a plumber but when he was due to come and he phoned our toilet was working OK, so he decided not to come out.
However, things came to a head in the last few days when clear water with 'dirty bits' came up into our bath. I called them out again. But this morning again all is working OK, but I am hoping they will come out, as plunging the toilet is not a nice thing when it doesn't work, and in my non expert eyes there is obviously something wrong.

It sounds like something is backed up in the drain line. That is the only way that waste from the toilet would end up in the bath. I'm guessing that the bath is draining slower than usual also. I would try putting some drain opener down both the toilet and the bath before I called a plumber out. An intermittant problem sounds like a partial clog. Sometimes a drain opener will clear it beore it gets to bad. Just make sure you open follow the instructions exactly. If you are unsure what type pipes you have, get something that is safe for PVC pipes. If the bottle doesn't specify what type of pipes it is for, remember that openers in plastic bottles are safe for plastic pipes. Otherwise, it couldn't be stored in a plastic bottle. If you are on a septic system instead of sewer, make sure the drain opener is safe for septic systems and treat the septic tank afterwards. You might want to open some windows to provide a little ventilation. Some drain openers/cleaners can have a strong odor. If that doesn't help, you may need a plumber to come out and "snake" the drain. Hopefully you don't have any tree roots that have invaded the pipes. That can be a problem if the pipes are very old or a cheaper grade product was installed in the first place. I've been fortunate in the fact that any pipes that I have had to replace have been outside and I could reach them with a shovel and replace them myself.

The plumber came out (we're covered by plumbing insurance) but wasn't able to correct anything becuase of a neighbour who refused us access to her back garden, because it was too messy (which I can't deny). So I spent all day yesterday on the phone trying to sort something out, and have just heard that in her tenancy agreement she agreed to let access in such cases. So It's a case of calling the plumber back out. Add to this my mum was rished into hospital with a suspected stroke - which late they said was a severe chest infection. I was told on Saturday when I got in from a party that she was on her last legs, and then Sunday afternoon I was told that if she kept eating she'd be home by the end of the week

That's awful, Dave. The state of medical care does sound rather 'iffy', doesn't it, they should be more careful before scaring the wits out of one!

She's back home at my sister's Dave. Thanks for asking. It seems they're having a great deal of difficulty regulating her blood pressure.

Still no progress in that area, I'm afraid.
