Having just had my annual eye test at Dolland and Aitchinson it was decided I needed some new glasses, as too did my wife. We picked our frames and they totalled the sum up - what with my vari-focals and the react to light tinting the total sum tallied at over £700 for just two pairs!
Somewhat shocked at the ludicrous amount of money they were demaning I said I couldn't afford it and we'd try over the road at specsavers - which we did.
Specsavers were much cheapers though still expensive coming in at £279 for the two pairs.

Dabbit, I've only just discovered this Internet website - www.eyeglassdirect.com/ which is a lot less expensive and even ships internationally. My eye exam is next week which is why I was looking - the reviews are really good. What you do is have your eye exam and get them to write out the prescription for you - then go online and order your eyeglasses for about $28 for the first pair and 1/2 off for a second pair of the same prescription. I plan on trying them if my prescription has changed since my new glasses last year were close to $500!

According to the reuters exchange machine thats about £254 Mark! Was that for single vision lenses or vari focals? My prescirption was vari focals which explains why it was so expensive. I might well try an online version next time though

Dabbit, The last time I got new glasses it cost me $550 for the one pair of graduated lens. I need glasses for distance (I am near sighted) but seeing as I do a great deal of computer work, I needed a transition for the computer. The bottom third of the lens is clear glass, as I don't need glasses for reading. What a pain. Then, of course, I got contacts for when I am not working. Another few dollars. It all gets so expensive. Now I will wait for Mark to use the internet and see how he does.

Yes, Dabbit, they are vari-focal or 'graduated' lenses, which are more expensive. I have my annual eye exam this coming Thursday morning, April 12th, and if the prescription changes, believe you me I shall order the $28 version and give you a full report.

Sure thing, Dabbit. However, I've changed the appointment to next Tuesday, so it'll be delayed just a tad.... ;D

I can't believe how expensive glasses are. I was in the Opticians only yesterday picking up some new glasses, and the man in front of me paid a bill for over £300. Ludicrous!

Try that link I posted, Louise, they deliver internationally - it's worth a look anyway.

I looked on a web site in the UK and my varifocals would have been under £100 instead

Look at this one, Dabbit, they average about 15-20 pounds with shipping to the UK, I'd imagine. www.eyeglassdirect.com/

My youngest (the one who lives with her boyfriend) has just (on friday) had her eyes tested and she asked for her prescription. The optician asked why she wanted it and she said she was going to try an online service to which he nearly had a fit saying she shouldn't do it - that she needed the services of a qualified optician etc etc. Of course he was probably just worried about losing a sale i m o

I think that's exactly right, Dabbit. If one pays for an examination, one should be entitled to the results, and that would include the prescription. I'd change eye specialists after that if it were me. I would have responded to them that I was entitled to the prescription and needed it for my 'records'. What could they say to that?
