On my way out yesterday I had a quick look at my strawberry plants and noticed that two plants have strawberries already, I thought it might be a little early to be honest - but there they were in their full glory waiting to get a little bigger and ripen up!

How lovely to see those little berries. I have my strawberries planted in a strawberry planter. I love the way they cascade down the sides and I get to see the flowers and watch the progression of the berries. Even better, they never get dirty.

Right, what's a year more or less? Or two? ;D
I've got blackberry bushes in back (don't see any blackberries yet) and I'll take a picture soon and post it.

I've just had my first bowl of strawberries from my tub much to my wifes upset (I left her none)...But I wonder whether anyone knows of a way to ripen them up quicker. I mean previous years I've just had to be content with the odd one or two here and there because they all ripened at different time, how lovely it would be to ripen as many as you wanted...

Dabbit, I've found that if you set them in a bowl or basket in a window which receives good sunlight, they'll ripen quickly, certainly within a day.

Actually, tomato's ripen faster placed in a brown bag in a warm spot. They ripen in dark not light.

Do they Maria? I never knew that - I generally put them on a bright window ledge

I also hear they ripen quicker when placed by a banana

I know if you place an apple in a bag with a banana, the gas from the apple ripens the banana faster.

All of which reminds me, for some reason, of all the various flavors of banana there actually are. I experienced different flavors traveling throughout Central and South America, some sweeter than others and some even having a citrus-like flavor. Here are some of the varieties found in Hawaii alone - www.hawaiifruit.net/BananaPix/index.htm

And wouldn't it be nice if Jo were here to add her wealth of knowledge on foods? :-(
Because of the high hispanic population here, we have wonderful selections of various bananas.
