Dear Alex
I saw on TV a french footballer that head butted an Italian player...apparently this is said to have been because the Italian player said something racist about the french players parents. I wonder Alex whether you would ever think that this sort of behaviour was acceptable? Should we protect our families at all costs from verbal abuse so agressively, or should we just stand away and try to ignore it?

Tough question there. That sort of behavior is not acceptable for either team. But boys being boys they are going to trash talk. Why Because if the other player takes offense he loses his cool and doesn't play as well. Or does something to retaliate and gets kicked out of the game. Under the circumstances ther he should have shrugged off the comments and took them as what they were taunts to make him lose his cool. In normal nongame situations, bashing ones parents is not acceptable behavior. Headbutting isn't either. I prefer to take the high road. Ignore the dog. If he presists, rip him a new....... belly button.

He probably was an immigrant playing for the French. Although the young French people seem to be rather rabid about their job security. The most animaton I've ever seem out of France.

The trouble is the effect they have on the youth who will watch that and then think it's OK to do it if the very people they look up to and respect behave that way.

I mean, he didn't use his hands, right? Thing is, sticks and stones and all that....he would have walked off the world stage a much bigger person by ignoring the Italian player. Two unsportsmanlike actions don't cancel each other out - all are punished.

Haven't the French and Italians always badmouthed each other? Or maybe that's just French and Italian cats. People watch sports and expect to see some bad behavior. BUT when it comes to soccer I think it's the fans that have corrupted the players. Being feline I don't understand this "I am number 1" thing that fans have. They are just watching a game. They are not part of it. So it's the team that is number one not the fans. I am definitely missing a big link there.

You'll have to ask either Beavis or Head-Butt - I don't have a clue, Alex.

Personally, I think there's far too much emphasis on sports. Teachers should make more money than coaches, but they don't. Police Officers and Firefighters should make more than your run-of-the-mill second-string professional sports player, but they don't. Don't get me wrong, sports have their place, but that place should not be a pedestal.

Maybe Pittsburgh will support him. Who knows. I often wonder if Arnold would have won his seat if he was married to aomeone other than a Kennedy. But you did have Reagan as a president and he did fine. I think in the long run all politicians are great actors. I would really like to see a Smart Alex for President sign. Would warm my heart. Make me purr. Be almost as good as a big sniff of catnip.
